I’ve heard some flower farmers call August, “Slaugust,’ because of the slog of heat, weeds and slow sales.
This August, was a little different. Yes, there are plenty of weeds. But, after weeks of intense heat, we were blessed with cool, breezy days and nights in the 50’s!
I hosted Children’s Flower Hour and Adult Happy Hour. For the kids, the most popular part is feeding the chickens.
One of my favorite August flowers is the Limelight Hydrangea. It can be cut for fresh bouquets first and then, when the petals start to “antique,” cut it for dried arrangements. The stems will last for years!Â
I’m grateful to the Markets at Kenilworth and Overlea. The volunteers, vendors, and customers who attend are the best folks. They care about community, farms, and small businesses. Thank You!
As we close August, the colors are bold and bright. Celosia, marigolds, and rudbeckia shine in pinks and golds.
I’ll be at Kenilworth Market on Tuesdays 3 pm-6 pm and Overlea Farmer’s Market on September 13th and September 27th. The produce, fruit, honey, olives, cheese and more are so good right now.
Reminder! I’m offering Wednesday Flowers each week. It’s a small bucket of blooms for pick up on Wednesdays only. Great mid-week pick me up. A bucket of loose stems for you to arrange.
Look for the annual Tulip Bulb and Ranunculus Corm sale starting in September. Each order comes with instructions on how to plant. These are the same varieties I plant each year. Order now and pick up in November when is time to plant.
