It’s peony time. For three weeks in mid May, peonies bloom in yellows, whites, pinks, and reds. They start to bloom slowly, and then on the first very warm day, they fling open! I try to harvest at the marshmallow stage.

One of the best colors to mix with peony is sky blue. The nigella, delphinium and baptisia have been spectacular this year.

The Merlin bird app is my new favorite thing. By using your phone’s microphone, it will identify the bird.

I learned the distinct Baltimore Oriole song and then found one in the park! Birds are amazing. They are helpful to the garden. They eat bad bugs, promote seed scattering, and are a good indicator of environmental health.

One of the good bugs is the ladybug. Here she is eating aphids on my yarrow. This happened last year, too. The yarrow is covered in black aphids that suck the life out of a plant. The ladybugs came through, and over a few weeks, all the aphids were gone!

I was surprised to learn we are technically still in drought. The rain has been lovely, hoping we are closing the gap.
Dahlia tuber planting is happening now. The days are warm enough to plant. Blooms begin in late summer and are beautiful. The tuber, pictured below, is not.

I’m so happy spring is here and I get to be outside most of the day. The flowers are blooming steadily now, and I’m at the markets.
Find me at Kenilworth Farmer’s Market on Tuesdays, 3pm-6pm under the parking pad. And at Overlea Farmer’s Market every other Saturday, starting June 7th, 8:30am-12:30pm.

Thanks to a very good friend, Archie is art. This wonderful stained glass is amazing. Archie is captured perfectly, and I love the colors. Huge thanks to Sugden Stained Glass in IowaÂ
